Three decades ago, Jeffrey Kipnis embarked on a quest for the new in architecture, bringing forth a whole range of influential ideas and approaches fusing design theory with novel instrumental design methods in the pursuit of experimental design along with his five points for a new architecture. In 1992 he also initiated the massively influential Graduate Design Group at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London that lasted four years, from 1992 to 1996. Now, three decades later it is high time to take stock of these developments. Is the quest for the "new" still on? Are the themes that were set out then still pertinent? Have they transformed in relation to a vastly changed global context and architectural discourse? And which lasting impact did these efforts have on the discipline of architecture?
The symposium will unfold along with a set of themed and moderated conversations between Jeffrey Kipnis and key companions in the quest for the new.
